The Pope of Catholic Church is the highest spiritual leader. He is often called also Summus Pontifex, Pontifex Maximus or Servus servorum Dei.
His influence and power are not as significant as in medieval times, but the Pope is still strong enough to influence the lives of many people all around the world. There were ten popes in the 20th and 21st centuries. The first seven of them come from Italy, Europe. Then in 1978, St John Paul II (personal name Karol Wojtyla) was elected as the new Pope. He was born in Poland, Europe, and start the tradition of non-Italian Popes. He was succeeded by Benedict XVI (personal name Joseph Ratzinger) from Germany. After he stepped down, the newly elected Pope was even from another continent. Pope Francis (own name Jorge Mario Bergoglio) is from Buenos Aires in Argentina, South America.
In your opinion, will the new tradition continue? Will we see the first black pope? Or will we return to the Italian pope?
